Municipal Mapping
The Municipality Mapping application empowers users to discover Statistics Canada’s geo enabled data
- facilitating access to municipal and other local statistics through geographic presentation of
socio-economic and demographic conditions at the census subdivision (CSD) level. The use of data
visualization techniques can also improve data literacy, and identify opportunities to collaborate
on analysis and data development.
Find and explore data, through these mapping components by selecting an indicator to view data, and generate tables and charts.

Census Subdivision (CSD) | Census subdivision (CSD) is the general term for municipalities (as determined by provincial/territorial legislation) or areas treated as municipal equivalents for statistical purposes (e.g., Indian reserves, Indian settlements and unorganized territories). Municipal status is defined by laws in effect in each province and territory in Canada. |
Census Metropolitan Area (CMA) | A census metropolitan area (CMA) or a census agglomeration (CA) is formed by one or more adjacent municipalities centred on a population centre (known as the core). A CMA must have a total population of at least 100,000 based on data from the current Census of Population Program, of which 50,000 or more must live in the core based on adjusted data from the previous Census of Population Program. |
Low income | Specifically, the threshold is defined as the income below which a family is likely to spend 20 percentage points more of its income on food, shelter and clothing than the average family. There are separate cut-offs for seven sizes of family - from unattached individuals to families of seven or more persons - and for five community sizes - from rural areas to urban areas with a population of more than 500,000. |
Labour Force | According to the standard definition employed by Statistics Canada, the employed are persons having a job or business, whereas the unemployed are without work, are available for work, and are actively seeking work. Together the unemployed and the employed constitute the labour force. |
Employment rate | The employment rate is the number of employed people as a percentage of the population aged 15 and older. The rate for a particular group (for example, youths aged 15 to 24) is the number employed in that group as a percentage of the population for that group. |
Unemployment rate | The unemployment rate is the number of unemployed people as a percentage of the labour force (employed and unemployed). |
Participation rate | The participation rate is the number of employed and unemployed people as a percentage of the population aged 15 and older. |
Standard error | Standard error is a commonly used measure of sampling error. Standard error is the degree of variation of the estimate considering that a particular sample was selected, rather than another, among all possible samples of the same size under the same sample design. |
Seasonally adjusted | Monthly or quarterly time series data are sometimes influenced by seasonal and calendar effects. These effects can bring about changes in the data that normally occur at the same time, and in about the same magnitude, every year. |
Suitable housing | This category includes households where the required number of bedrooms based on the National Occupancy Standard (NOS) does not exceed the reported number of bedrooms in the dwelling. |
Non-suitable housing | This category includes households where the required number of bedrooms based on the NOS exceeds the reported number of bedrooms in the dwelling. |
